There are times in life when things can feel complicated in a way that is hard to explain. Not dramatic, not a crisis, just a low background sense of effort. Too many decisions. Too much mental noise. A feeling of constantly adjusting, reacting, second-guessing.
In moments like that, I often find myself coming back to something very simple. Not a new technique, not another idea to add to the pile, but a small set of principles I can lean on. A way of orienting, rather than solving.
This is one of the gifts of the Seven Principles of Huna.
They are not rules to obey or beliefs you have to adopt. They are more like lenses you can look through. Each one points to a way life seems to work when we slow down enough to notice. The world is shaped by how we see it. Attention directs experience. Power lives in the present moment. Love connects. Effectiveness matters more than theory.
Individually, each principle is simple. Almost obvious. But when you begin to live with them, not just think about them, they start to form a kind of inner compass. When something feels off, you can gently ask, Which principle might help me see this differently? Where is my attention right now? Am I trying to force something outside my actual moment of power? What would be the more loving or effective move here?
Over time, this does something subtle but profound. Life can start to feel less like a series of problems to manage and more like an ongoing conversation you are part of. You are not separate from what is happening. You are participating in shaping it, through perception, focus, feeling, and choice.
If you’d like a simple experiment this week, try choosing just one small situation each day and look at it through the lens of one of the seven principles.
For example:
You do not have to get it right. This is exploration, not performance. Just noticing is already a shift.
And if you are interested in exploring the Seven Principles of Huna in more depth, we are running a live online seven part workshop Diving Deep Into The Seven Principles of Huna starting in April, where we take time to experience each one more fully. You are very welcome to join us if it feels like the right moment.
