Sometimes it’s tempting to think that it’s impossible to make a difference. Maybe a challenge seems too great, maybe you don’t know where to start or maybe you think that there is nothing you can do to affect things. I am reminded of a proverb, likely of African origin that states:
‘if you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent a night with a mosquito!’
A reminder that even small things can be powerful.
As a child I remember playing games with dominoes – standing them up in various patterns then pushing one to topple another and so on in a chain reaction. The video below provides a neat metaphor for how a small action can result in a signficant result. The chain of just 13 dominoes results in a tiny 5mm high domino causing a one meter high domino to topple over. Apparently if this was a chain of 29 dominoes with each successive dominoe being 1.5 times larger than its predecessor it would result in toppling something the size of the Empire State Building.
It’s amazing to think of the potential consequences that just one tiny action can have. If you ever find yourself thinking -‘why bother, what difference can I make?’ then maybe it’s time to reconsider that way of thinking and just take that first step…..
