New Class: Diving Deeper into The Seven Principles of Huna

We are excited to offer a seven-part online course titled “Diving Deeper into the Seven Principles of Huna.” Stewart and I, first hosted this class last year and received very positive feedback, so we are eager to delve into this fascinating subject once again.

The Seven Principles form the foundation of Huna philosophy. They are essential components of Huna and often the first concepts people encounter. These principles offer a valuable perspective on reality and serve as a powerful guide for living. However, despite their importance, it’s easy to engage with them only on a surface level and take their value for granted.

In an article a few years back Revisiting The Seven Principles of Huna: A Worthwhile Practice I wrote:

“…the seven principles are an all-pervasive aspect of the Huna philosophy. That can be a strength and it also presents a challenge.

The challenge lies in risking taking the principles for granted – they are after all presented simply and on the face of it easy to understand. However, this can result in a limited and cursory engagement with them. Even if we think we ‘know’ them, we change and so does our relation to, and perspective on, the seven principles and there is always more to learn and insights to be gained.

Revisiting the Seven Principles from time to time with fresh eyes and an open mind and exploring new ways to engage with them is a worthwhile and extremely rewarding process which I would strongly encourage”.

These principles can be used as tools for personal growth, self-discovery, and spiritual development. A summary of each of the principles are below:

  1. Ike (The World is What You Think It Is): This principle emphasizes the power of perception. It suggests that our thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes shape our experience of reality. If you change your thinking, you change your world. It encourages mindfulness and awareness of one’s thoughts and the impact they have on life experiences.
  2. Kala (There Are No Limits): This principle is about freedom and release. It teaches that there are no inherent boundaries between you and your desires, and that limitations are often self-imposed or learned. It encourages forgiveness, letting go of past hurts, and embracing the limitless potential within oneself.
  3. Makia (Energy Flows Where Attention Goes): This principle focuses on concentration and intent. It suggests that whatever you give your attention and focus to will grow and manifest in your life. This principle encourages mindful attention to positive, constructive thoughts and actions, and the avoidance of negative focus.
  4. Manawa (Now is the Moment of Power): This principle emphasizes the importance of the present moment. It teaches that the past and future only exist in our minds, and that true power and potential exist in the now. It encourages living in the present, taking action now, and understanding that each moment is a chance to change and create.
  5. Aloha (To Love is to Be Happy With): This principle is centered around love and acceptance. It suggests that love is a state of being happy with oneself and others. It promotes kindness, compassion, and unconditional love, fostering harmonious relationships and inner peace.
  6. Mana (All Power Comes from Within): This principle is about personal power and authority. It teaches that all power comes from within oneself and that everyone has the power to influence their own life. It encourages self-empowerment, confidence, and taking responsibility for one’s own experiences and actions.
  7. Pono (Effectiveness is the Measure of Truth): This principle is focused on practicality and effectiveness. It suggests that what works for you and creates a positive result is the “truth.” It emphasizes flexibility, adaptability, and finding what is effective in any situation to achieve desired outcomes.

Despite the apparent simplicity of these principles there is an almost unlimited depth to which they can be explored and applied. In the seven part weekly online class starting on 4th November we will we be providing an opportunity to work more deeply with each of the seven principles. Each session will focus on a separate principle and will involve a mixture of teaching, exercises, experiments and discussion as well as things to try out between sessions.
